In order to connect to a 5Ghz network you will need to have a dual band modem that transmits 5Ghz and a device that supports 5Ghz.

The 5Ghz network will always have 5G after the name of your network, if you cannot see the 5G that means that the device does not support it or you do not have a dual band modem. Click here to check our Flexi Bundle Offer.

In-case that your device does not support 5Ghz, you can buy a USB 5Ghz adapter for Laptops from a Local computer shop.

FAQ – What factors affect the speed of my internet access?

$
0
0

There are several topics that affect the speed of the internet such as;

Interferences

Interference typically comes from three different sources such as; walls and floors blocking wireless signals, other WiFi networks using the same channel as your own Wi-Fi network, appliances and electronics emitting radio frequency interference.

Number of Connected Users

Your speed will be shared amongst other users, therefore the more devices connected the slower the internet will be.

Ideally the modem is not placed close to windows, or within cupboards and off enclosed shelves. Ideally the modem is placed on top of a cabinet or shelf.

Location of the Modem

Ideally the modem is not placed close to windows, or within cupboards and off enclosed shelves. Ideally the modem is placed on top of a cabinet or shelf.

2.4GHz vs 5GHz Frequencies

2.4GHz frequency is able to reach a longer distance than 5GHz. However 5 GHz frequency provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds.

Your Equipment

Internet speed heavily depends on your network equipment, such as network card, router or Ethernet cable.

FAQ – Networks and devices interferences can slow down your speed

$
0
0

WiFi operates on the same frequency as other wireless appliances in your household such as, baby monitors, garage door openers, speakers, microwave or fridge. Keep in mind that also your neighbours are using WiFi and other devices. All those signals are conflicting each other and slow down your WiFi performance. Especially between 6pm till midnight people use more devices connected on the same frequency, impacting your network as well.

Network Interference is like you are at a concert with a band playing really loud. Due to the loud music going on, it’s difficult to talk to your friends, and so you end up talking louder in order to make yourself heard. However the people next to you have to raise their voice as well in order to make themselves heard with their friends with the band and all the people talking in higher voices. This makes it impossible to communicate and understand one another.

This is exactly what happens to wireless devices trying to communicate in a busy environment. Therefore use the 5GHz frequency to avoid interferences from other networks.

Melita High-end Arris modem supports 2 frequencies which are the 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The difference between the 2 wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. We recommend to use 5Ghz in order to get better and less congested performance.

FAQ – Internet Speed

Nowadays the Maltese home has an average of 5 internet connected devices. Different devices support certain maximum speeds, many of which are often lower than Melita’s top Internet speed.

There isn’t any specified amount of devices that you can have connected wirelessly, but keep in mind that your speed is shared amongst the devices. This can affect or slow down your connection.

If your home typically has a lot of devices connected to the internet example interactive TV, smart home devices, phones, laptops, tablets, and more opt for a higher internet speed.

FAQ – Better WiFi Range

$
0

Location of Modem

The location of your WiFi modem or router is very important for your wireless speed. Modems will usually give you good coverage in a large room. The shorter your signal has to travel, the faster your speeds will be and the further it has to travel, the slower it will become.

It’s vital to put your Melita modem in the right place: the nearer it is to where you use it, the better. If you want the best wireless coverage, your Melita Modem should be located in a central location in your home.  Modem’s range is mainly affected by the environment of the surrounding area and individual conditions in that particular household.

WiFi Range Extenders

If you require your wireless network to cover a larger area or more rooms where your WiFi connection is weak you need a wireless range extender to help boost your signal.

A WiFi range extender picks up the existing WiFi signal from your wireless modem and simply rebroadcasts it for further distance. WiFi range extenders are available for sale from computer stores.

Mesh System

WiFi Range extenders help bring connectivity to non internet zones, but also have their limitations. If you want seamless connectivity everywhere in your home, consider a WiFi Mesh system instead.  You can buy WiFi Mesh systems from computer stores or in computer equipment specialising e-Shops
