Wi-Fi networks operate from different frequencies (channels). When there are a lot of Wi-Fi networks operating on the same frequency, the Wi-Fi signal will not remain strong, causing the Wi-Fi to be intermittent or having slower speeds. If there are 5 or more networks in your range, this creates excessive interference to your modem, causing your modem to loose its WI-Fi signal. To get a better connection and avoid this interference, you can upgrade to an Arris modem which supports the 5Ghz frequency. This will improve your Wi-fi strength and speed. See more information about the Arris modem below.
Interference can be commonly identified by the amount of Wi-Fi networks at your area, the more there are the more interference there would be.
Another factor that could interfere with the Wi-Fi frequency, are devices that use frequency to function. An example of these devices is:
Cordless Telephones
Baby Monitors
Microwaves
Other Wi-Fi routers or extenders
These devices should be kept away from the modem if possible around 1.5 meters.
It is highly recommended that you set up your modem frequency as ‘auto’ since the modem would automatically be choosing the best frequency available in your area.
You can find instructions of how to change your wireless modem frequency below, depending on the type of modem you have.
Why choose to get the ARRIS modem?
The Arris modem is a Dual Band modem which has the capability to transmit both on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless band.
2.4GHz though more widespread in usage uses only 3 non-overlapping channels for transmission, which are crowded due to a lot of interfering devices such as Wi-Fi access points, microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.
5GHz channel is much cleaner with less interference thus providing a better Wi-Fi experience, with 23 non-overlapping channels (8 times more than 2.4GHz) for transmission.
You can get this modem with monthly fee of 2 Euro only and a one time charge of €10, including installation support.
You can also get this modem for free if you subscribe to a 100mbps Melita connection or higher.
