How to improve WiFI range and speed of your internet
Your internet speed can really affect how you interact with the online world. It’s great when you can stream a video without a glitch, or have an uninterrupted video call. But it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes your internet speed is not what you expect and may lead to frustration.
If you really want the maximum speed available, just plug in your cable to your PC or laptop and you will have all the bandwidth to yourself! However, you can also use your internet connection via Wi-Fi if your modem has this option. Connecting via Wi-Fi might have some limitations, so here are some tips how to improve the range and the speed of your internet connection.
1. The location of your modem.
This is the key to the best Wifi coverage possible.
It’s vital to put your Melita Router in the right place: the nearer it is to where you use it, the better. If you want the best wireless coverage, put your Melita Router in a central location in your home, you’ll reduce the number of walls slowing down your signal. This means you can get better Wi-fi in more places in your home.
Also, put your modem at least 1.5 metres away from solid or reflective surfaces like walls, double glazing windows, televisions, cordless phones, and metal which may slow down your Wi-fi speeds and cause interference.
- Move your modem away from the window.
If you put your Melita Router next to a window, half of your signal will be sent outside. That’s bad news for coverage which will affect speed.
- Keep the Melita Router in Line of Sight!
If the Melita Router is not in line of sight or for example: in a cabinet, this will reduce the wifi range and also slow your connection down.
- Get your modem off the floor, put it on a shelf or a high cabinet.
The reason being is that if you had to put it on the floor this will be losing a large amount of signal being sent downwards.
- Avoid putting it behind Television’s, Computers or any other metal objects.
Keep it away from anything reflective (such a mirrors, cordless phones, metal objects), to achieve better signal. The wifi signal gets lost in dense objects.
2. From time to time, give your device a break.
Switch it off for a few minutes then turn it back on (did you know this can solve 40% of the problem each time!)

4. Extra Tips.
Materials in your home like concrete, stone, walls are the most factors that can cause signal degradation. It’s normally quite difficult to determine which materials are installed in your home, and which are causing issues, but using a Wi-Fi repeater or relocating your router can help improve things.
Although the below items should not cause major problems, it could be worth keeping them in mind if you are having problems resolving any issues you have.
Things to avoid next to the modem.
Cordless Telephones
Baby Monitors
Windows
Reflective surfaces
Metal objects
Microwaves
If possible, there should always be a line of sight to the Modem/Router.
Any use of Wi-Fi Extenders should not be where signal is low or else extended signal will be poorly extended.
